Horse Girl Fashion is Trending for Fall—Here’s How To Wear It as a Mom

I have a confession to make: As a mom, I actually love fashion trends. While they are sometimes criticized for being flippant and costly, I can’t help but find them exciting. As new micro-trends and aesthetics rise in popularity, I love drawing inspiration from each and using them as opportunities to put together new looks with pieces I already own. Like many, my clothing budget is limited, so I’m always looking for ways to reduce how much I’m shopping, while also maintaining fashion as a creative outlet I enjoy.  My cozy cardigans, for example, received equal wear during my cottage-core and coastal grandma eras

This fall, there’s one particular trend that’s been quietly yet forcefully trotting ahead of the rest: Equestrian fashion style. Colloquially dubbed the “horse girl aesthetic” online, this versatile trend began on the runways and is now capturing hearts across generations and fashion preferences—my own included.

As someone who took riding lessons as a girl (and who loves cowboy boots as much as preppy New England fashion), I’ve been loving this new aesthetic and its embodiment of the fierce femininity, polish, and free-spiritedness that is associated with horseback riding and equine culture.

Here’s a breakdown of the Equestrian fashion style and how to wear it as a mom.

Key Takeaways: Horse Girl Aesthetic for Fall 2025

  • Equestrian-inspired trend: Blends Western (cowboy boots, fringe) and English (riding boots, tweed) styles.
  • Versatile & customizable: Fits a range of looks from preppy to boho and adapts to your personal style.
  • Key pieces to shop: Riding or cowboy boots, barn jackets, plaid, suede, horse motifs, and functional outerwear.
  • Mom-friendly styling ideas: Pair leggings with boots and a barn coat for an elevated, comfy look. Mix standout pieces with basics.
  • Two Easy Style Routes: Classic Prep (polos, blazers, leather bags) and Boho Western (flowy dresses, quilted coats, peasant tops).

What Is the Horse Girl Aesthetic?

What makes this fashion trend unique is its range. It consists of two similar yet distinct aesthetics: Western and English equestrian. This means cowboy boots and suede fringe jackets are as relevant as tweed blazers styled over leggings. Again, two very different vibes that are unified by equine sport, culture, and lifestyle.

Because this overarching aesthetic is so broad, the opportunity for personalization based on style preferences is also vast. For example, you might have loved the ranch-inspired cover and feature of Vogue’s October 2025 edition, complete with a plaid barn jacket and cowboy boots. On the other hand, Eastern Ralph Lauren-esque fits may be more your style. It’s all about taking inspiration from the stables and making it your own.

When it comes to key pieces, this aesthetic is all about tall riding boots, barn jackets, and sweaters emblazoned with horse silhouettes. Other popular items that niche down into the English riding aura include tweed blazers and skirts, riding leggings, and polo tops. Western-inspired pieces include bohemian skirts and dresses, bolo necklaces, and clothing and accessories constructed in a signature cow or pony print.

How to Wear the Horse Girl Aesthetic as a Mom

Dressing within the parameters of a micro trend can sometimes feel intimidating or—if you’re a mom—beyond the realm of what’s feasible for everyday life with kids. As a mom of three (who also loves fashion), I’ve found the key to be pulling basic themes from a specific trend and executing those that excite me and fit into my lifestyle. For example, I love tall boots and am looking to this trend for new practical styling ideas.

Here’s some ideas for embracing equine fashion without feeling like you’re dressing for a day at the dude ranch.

Don’t Be Afraid to Be on the Nose

From cow-print boots to horse motif sweaters, this aesthetic doesn’t shy away from obvious identifiers. Pair statement pieces with wardrobe neutrals, such as a white bohemian skirt if you’re going for a Western look or a pair of tailored shorts for something more elevated.

Opt for Boots

If there’s one fashion item that’s synonymous with equestrian fashion, it’s a go-to pair of riding boots. Incorporating tall English saddle or cowboy boots into your daily looks is a simple and approachable way to dress on-trend. Style either boot with a skirt or slim pants. If you don’t already own a pair of tall, quality boots, invest in one knowing they’ll never go out of style.

Dress Up Your Leggings

Leggings are a long-time cozy fashion staple, but they’re also a go-to piece in the equine world. Dress them up with an on-trend jacket (such as a barn coat) and an eye-catching pair of boots. A classic neutral sweater and simple gold jewelry complete the look. Better yet, opt for riding-inspired leggings.

Be Intentional With Outerwear

A horse girl spends most of her time outdoors. Aside from shoes, the jacket and accessories you choose take your outfit from everyday to equestrian. Don’t be afraid to reach for practical pieces that will see you through less-than-ideal weather (we see you fall-time, outdoor sporting, and school events). Barn jackets, long woolen trenches, and leather gloves are all key trend staples that will keep you warm and dry during the colder months.

Add Plaid

As soon as the first leaf begins to change color, you’ll find me wearing plaid. Needless to say I love a trend that green-lights this iconic cold-weather pattern. With a nod to crisp mornings spent at the stables, adding plaid (whether it be a flannel shirt or a preppy dress or blazer) is an easy and convenient way to add touches of equestrian to your look.

Lean Into Classic Autumnal Prep

When in doubt, go preppy. Think rugby polo tops, headbands, blazers, and leather handbags and gloves. These staples are all classically autumnal, so it’s likely you have an item or two already hanging in your closet. Swap out typical, expected jeans or trousers for a pair of leggings or a pleated skirt.

Alternatively, Go Boho

If you’re a free spirit who prefers flowing layers to buttoned-up prep, opt to channel the Western-inspired side of this aesthetic. Peasant blouses, denim dresses, ruffled skirts, and quilted jackets are all comfortable staples that pair exceedingly well with a favorite pair of cowgirl boots. Bonus: These pieces are all ridiculously practical, which means they’re great for life with kids.
